We’ve just made our March donation to Kiva, who this month reached the huge milestone of reaching one million people through more than $400million in microloans, in 65 countries.

This month, we’ve provided a loan of $575 to Japhet and his group in Mtsara wa Tsatsu, Kenya, to allow them to pay for ecualyptus seedlings, fertilizer, training, and plantation maintenance.

He’s a 35-year-old father of two, who makes chairs, tables, and doors for the local market, while his wife farms cassava, maize, cowpeas, and kale on their land.

The biggest challenge he faces is a lack of materials to make his products, as timber – when he can get it – is very expensive.

He’s described this loan as “harvesting for the future of my children’s lives,” and hopes to use the income from his trees to educate his children, buy timber for his woodworking business, and eventually build a house for his family.
